SAN FRANCISCO

o I have not been to San Francisco. It is just a gimmick to get you to read my "hippy day- poet story." But, I have been to Yellowstone Park, The Grand Tetons, and for the first time in my life to Idaho and Montana. What a month. I have now visit 48 states. I need Alaska and, believe it or not, North Dakota.
Yellowstone was fabulous. The burnt trees, some 36%, allowed one to see somewhat further than usual. We were blessed with a fresh snow near Old Faithful, tantalized a few bison, and I almost ran over an Elk. The edge of the park leading into Montana was one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. We spent the night in Gardiner, Montana and ate at the Yellowstone Mine. Tempertures average 25 degrees below zero in winter say the natives.
After Yellowstone, we spent a couple of days in Salt Lake City. Visited the Beehive (where Brigham Young kept one of his 27 wives), ate a wonderful meal in The Lion's House Restaurant, and enjoyed the Mormon Tabernacle and associated views. Maybe someday I will write the story. A wonderful place to visit. What a nice travel month was June- 1998.
MOON BIG ISLAND HANDBOOK
 Moon Travel Handbooks most recent edition is their BIG ISLAND HANDBOOK. Oh how I love the Big Island. It was there I went on my first solo kayak adventure, a la Paul Theroux, only to result in a crash landing (now I know what the red flags are for) resulting in loss of my only pair of glasses! (You can see other kayakers on page 266 in this handbook). This updated edition includes Hawaii Volcanoes, the Kona Coast, and Waipio Valley. John Palmer Parker's ranch is included in detail under Waimen (Kamuela).-- to put it mildly it is quite a spread. The largest ranch in the world. A winner!
